Habbo NFT: The Habbo Avatars Project

THE HABBO AVATARS PROJECT

Habbos! Very soon we’ll be creating, or ‘minting’ roughly 12,500 unique, randomly generated Habbo avatars. We’re calling it the Habbo Avatars project.

Initially, at least, these avatars will be bits of pixel art that can be bought with a cryptocurrency called Ethereum. What sets these bits of pixel art apart from any old screenshot of a Habbo avatar is:

1. Each one will be unique.
2. The avatars are NFTs, or non-fungible tokens. So, as well as being unique in terms of the items they are wearing, the avatars are unique in that only one of each of them will exist.

Also, importantly: ownership of the avatar is registered on the Ethereum blockchain, not on our servers. This is important because the blockchain is used to track the ownership of the NFT.

TWO EXTREMELY IMPORTANT MESSAGES THAT EVERY SINGLE HABBO SHOULD READ, NO EXCEPTIONS:

IMPORTANT: please make sure that you check the terms of service and ensure you are over the age required to use services like MetaMask and, if you use it, Opensea.

ALSO IMPORTANT: it’s absolutely crucial that you’re aware of the risks of being scammed if you try to purchase one of these avatars when they are released. Please ensure that if you are purchasing an NFT avatar from outside of the purpose-built Habbo Avatars website (e.g. Opensea), you verify that the avatar is a legitimate one from the Habbo Avatars collection, not a copycat.

Anyway, we’re sure you’ve got a huge number of questions about what NFTs are, the avatars themselves, and how you as a member of the Habbo community will be affected. We want you to be as informed as possible, so let’s get into it.

WHAT ARE NFTS?

For a lot of people, the abbreviation ‘NFT’ and the term non-fungible token might mean very little. Fortunately, Habbo itself has a really good example of what an NFT is similar to: LTDs. You can think of an NFT as a unique, digital item that can be owned in the same way a real life item can be owned.

Here’s an image to give you a better understanding of what NFTs are, and how they compare to other types of items, digital and physical:

HOW WILL THIS AFFECT MY HABBO EXPERIENCE?

Owning one or more of the Habbo Avatars as a collector’s item will be cool, but our team is also investigating the possibility of giving everyone who owns one the chance to use it as a type of avatar ‘skin’ for actual avatars they own inside the game.

We’ve put together a detailed frequently asked questions guide about the above topics, why we’re undertaking this project, and how it’ll benefit the Habbo and the community.

DISCORD

Many existing and successful NFT projects have their own vibrant communities that are centred around a messaging platform called Discord. We intend to do the same.

Check this page for some frequently asked questions about this new Discord server and what we plan to do there.

HOW ARE PEOPLE GOING TO GET THESE NFT AVATARS?

They’ll be available from a new, purpose-built Habbo Avatars website in something called a ‘Dutch auction’. We decided to run the sale this way, as opposed to a direct, flat price model because it helps to avoid what are called ‘gas wars’ – thousands of people flooding the NFT shop page at one time.

Note: please read the above warnings about the terms and conditions of external service providers used to purchase NFTs and the risks of scamming.
